Why in the discussion?

According to a report released by the Vienna International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran is still running its nuclear program according to the terms of the nuclear deal and has not exceeded the limit of the low-growth uranium reserves. In compliance with the Nuclear Deal, 2015, with Iran’s main powers, the boundary of its nuclear program is maintained within the limits of the conditions imposed by the deal.

Important point

  • Despite the restrictions imposed by the United States (US) against Tehran, Iran continues to abide by nuclear restrictions established by the 2015 Nuclear Deal.
  • Iran’s low-enriched uraniun limit still remains 149.4 kg It is within the limit of 202.8 kg fixed by the deal.
  • The Heavy Water reserves of Iran are still unchanged at around 122.8 tonnes. Heavy water is considered a less sensitive substance which is used as a moderator in a nuclear reactor. But it is still prohibited under the deal.
  • Although Iran has continued to produce at present, but 1.7 tonnes of this has been sent abroad, while 1.5 tons has been used in making medical compounds.

What is the Nuclear Deal, 2015?

  • During the Barack Obama administration in 2015, Iran, together with the United States, Britain, Russia, China, France and Germany, had a nuclear deal.
  • This deal was named Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
  • According to this deal, Iran had to open its nuclear plants to monitor for reduction in the related uranium deposits.
  • Instead, concession was granted to the sanctions imposed on Iran.
  • Some time ago, American President Trump separated from this agreement saying that Iran continues its stealth-driven nuclear program. At the same time, they re-imposed oil and banking restrictions on Iran.
  • However, other signatories of this deal, such as Germany, Britain, France, Russia and China, still continue this deal.
  • At the same time, Iran is still associated with this deal because this deal prohibits many international sanctions. But this will happen only when three European powers, Russia and China are committed to preserving their trade benefits.
  • The aim of the US to reinstate the restrictions was to bring Iran’s nuclear program under strict borders and to prevent the ballistic missile being developed by it and prevent proxy forces from struggling in the Middle East.
